The Pops Spedster site is home to an instructional system designed to meet the academic and community-based instructional needs of students with intellectual/cognitive impairments.

DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE INSTRUCTION (DAI), is a system of instruction that involves probing a student's present level of educational performance.

The results of the probe can be used to design individualized education plans that meet IDEA requirements.

Some ELL students and home-schooled students could also benefit from the materials being offered on this site.

Pops Spedster And Company is an Oregon-based 501c3 non-profit, registered with the Oregon Secretary of State's office.

The DAI Verbal Communication Domain

The Communication Domain of the DAI Assessment System starts with the assessment of an individual's verbal communication skills. Scoring is based on a 0 to 3 scale. The discriminators specify whether the utterances of the individual are verbalizations (more sounds than actual words) or actual words. Scoring for the use of augmentative devices should be based on any and all augmentative devices from simple switches to electronic tablet apps.

In this photo, a student with limited mobility makes choices using a clock communicator. Pictures of choices are velcroed to the clock face. The student uses a simple button switch to move the hand of the clock to the desired item or activity.

DAI ASSESSMENT FOR STUDENTS WITH LOW INCIDENCE DISABILITIES

Score each item 1 to 3 with 1 being “needs full assistance” and 3 being “independent. Score 0 if there is no evidence to support the described behavior.

  9. I use regular ASL signs to communicate my needs and wants.    ______
  10. I use full spoken sentences in English to communicate my needs and wants.    ______

Domain Subtotal -  _____

A RELATIVELY HIGH Domain Subtotal score on this section of the DAI Assessment probably means that the individual has little or no need for instruction in Verbal Communication. Scores of 0 on discriminators 5 and 6 may indicate that the individual either has no need of an augmentative communication device or that the individual has never been matched with and trained to use an augmentative communication device.

Here is an Excel spreadsheet to help with this assessment. It automatically calculates the score for each discrimintor and can be used to produce a profile chart for this domain as it relates to each individual being assessed. Click below to open the spreadsheet.
